It’s no secret that the weather is getting a little crazier, from big storms to heavy downpours that leave neighborhoods looking like an Olympic swimming pool.  Flooding conditions seriously impact our lives – and that includes our vehicles.  You may think that “it won’t be that bad” but in the case of an approaching storm, Peruzzi Mitsubishi has these helpful tips to give your car, truck or SUV the best chance of escaping any damage.  In case of the worst, they also have suggestions for minimizing mechanical or interior problems.

First off, in the case of an approaching storm, park your vehicle under cover if you can.  That means a garage – even a temporary space in a parking garage if need be.  Keeping your car or truck away from wind and water is essential.  If you don’t have access to a garage, choose to park on higher ground versus street level.  You want to do everything you can to prevent water from entering your exhaust system or the interior of your vehicle.

Of course, the most important precaution you can take during a serious downpour is to avoid driving through big puddles.  They can be deceptive, and there are way too many stories of folks who think they can “make it through” — and then find themselves stranded in a floating, flooded car. Not only is it annoying, it often turns dangerous.  Err on the side of caution.

If your vehicle has suffered from flood damage, the service experts at Peruzzi Mitsubishi offer ways to keep any problems to a minimum.  The first thing to keep in mind is to not start your engine right away.  Water in the engine or exhaust system could trigger a major system failure.  Better to wait for things to dry out.

Use a wet/dry vacuum to clear water from the vehicle’s seats, floors and more.  You want to kickstart the drying-out process and help keep any mold from growing.  Then, get some fans and keep them blowing throughout the interior.  This may take some time, so be patient.

In today’s vehicles, there are many electronic parts that will need to be checked to ensure they’re still in working order after a flood.  If you’re unsure or uneasy, it’s worth a service check at Peruzzi Mitsubishi.  That peace of mind will be worth it.

Flood damage is never fun, but there are many ways to both prevent it– and to fix it if the worst happens.  Let Peruzzi Mitsubishi guide you through any issues.
