Congratulations to Mitsubishi Motors, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary as an automotive company this year! Founded in 1870 by Yataro Iwasaki, Mitsubishi was originally established as a shipping firm. In an effort to compete with the great technological advancements of the time, however, the company introduced its first motor vehicle, the Mitsubishi Model-A, in 1917.

The Mitsubishi Model-A was Japan’s first series-production automobile. Following its great success, the company achieved another automotive first with the creation of the Mitsubishi PX33 in 1937, which was Japan’s first passenger car with four-wheel drive.

Following the end of World War II in 1945, Mitsubishi Motors resumed its production of automobiles, and despite Japan’s struggling post-war economy, the company still managed yet another triumphant success with the creation of the Mitsubishi 500. In 1962, the Mitsubishi 500 set a new course record at the Macau Grand Prix, scoring the growing company yet another victory.

Hoping to expand its reach in overseas markets, Mitsubishi joined forces with American automotive group Chrysler during the 1970s to bring its cars to America. Chrysler sold the Mitsubishi Galant as the Dodge Colt, which proved itself to be a huge success for both Mitsubishi and Chrysler. By 1982, Mitsubishi Motors was ready to be introduced independently to the American market, and in 1989, the company introduced the Galant VR-4, which went on to win Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year.

With more than 40 years of American success under its belt and a century of producing quality automobiles, Mitsubishi continues to amaze.
